Degree Requirements and Regulations
The College of Education has a broad mission, the key feature of which is the preparation of professionals who develop the full human potential of the people they serve in schools and a wide variety of non-school settings by:
- Preparing professional individuals to conduct research and provide services and education in the health sciences.
- Educating practitioners for roles in teaching, counseling, psychology, administration and applied practice;
- Advancing the knowledge and skills of experienced practitioners;
- Advancing conceptual and methodological knowledge to conduct research;
- Advancing knowledge through scholarly investigation; and
- Leading and serving the organizations that benefit the communities of practice and academic study.
The College offers a range of graduate programs. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) is offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of Psychology. The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree is offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The Doctor of Philosophy (PH.D.) degrees are offered by the Department of Educational Psychology in Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology and Individual Differences, and School Psychology.
The College is approved by the State of Texas to offer the Provisional and the Professional Teaching Certificate, Texas Standard Principal Certificate, as well as certification for superintendent, counselor, educational diagnostician, generic special education, and reading specialist. Endorsement may also be secured in bilingual education, English as a second language, gifted and talented education, and early childhood education. Specific requirements for graduate and certification programs are listed in each department’s section.
Accreditation and Memberships
The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Its Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and Ph.D. in School Psychology are accredited by the American Psychological Association. The College’s educator certification programs are authorized by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). |
