J.D. Tuition and Fees
The University of Houston is a state-assisted institution. For Texas residents, tuition for the 2009-2010 school year is $541.15 per semester hour. The course load for the first year of law school is 30 semester hours full-time and 26 semester hours part-time.
The 2009-2010 tuition for nonresidents is $788.15 per semester hour. Approximately $2221 in fees also is required each semester for full-time students. Fees for part-time students are contingent on the number of semester hours for which the student is enrolled. Tuition and fee charges are set by the Texas legislature and the University of Houston System Board of Regents and are subject to change without notice.
The state legislature has provided two options for payment of fees during regular semesters. You may pay the balance in full or in three installments. You may pay by cash, check, money order, Mastercard or Discover. Checks and money orders should be payable to the University of Houston.
LL.M. Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees are based on the number of credit hours attempted each semester. For students completing the LL.M. program in two semesters, fall and spring, estimated tuition and fee expenses for the 2009-2010 academic years are $18,165 for Texas residents, $24,093 for nonresidents and $24,343 for international students.
Financial Aid
The University of Houston Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) administers a variety of financial aid programs.Each year you apply for financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Results of the need analysis are sent to you and your school. The OSFA will determine the financial award by subtracting the expected student/family contribution from the cost of attendance. Once need is determined, the OSFA will put together a financial aid package that typically consists of:
- Grants
- Institutional Scholarships
- Perkins Loans (need-based)
- Federal Stafford Subsidized Student Loans (need-based)
- Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Student Loans (non need-based)
The University of Houston begins awarding April 1 for the following fall/spring semesters. This only means that those filing early are processed first. Early submission of financial aid documentation is encouraged as state and institutional grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Financial aid award notices typically are e-mailed after May 1 and proceed throughout the summer.
The sequence should progress as follows:
- Student submits FAFSA information. Student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR).
- The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, will notify the student of the award by e-mail.
- Student then accepts the award in PeopleSoft and completes the Loans by Web process.
Retain copies of all financial aid information submitted to UH and to other financial aid institutions and save all check stubs.

Scholarships
The Office of Admissions offers a number of Dean’s Scholarships to each entering class. These merit scholarships vary in number and amount and are renewable for 6 semesters, provided that the student maintains the required grade point average. Each accepted applicant is automatically considered for a Dean’s Scholarship, and no separate application is required. University and UH system scholarships are also available, with recipients selected through a highly competitive nomination process. To ensure proper consideration for all scholarships, it is to your advantage to submit your application as early as possible and to take the LSAT by the early fall test date. |
