Environmental Health and Life Safety It is the goal of the University to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all students, employees, and visitors in accordance with federal and state standards. The creation and maintenance of a safe workplace and the development of positive attitudes regarding safety is the duty of all university employees, faculty and students.

The mission of Environmental Health & Life Safety (EHLS) group, which is part of the Department of Public Safety, is to support higher education and research in conjunction with the university community by promoting healthy and safe operations. EHLS is responsible for identifying and eliminating potential hazards throughout the campus while working through the proper channels. In addition, EHLS is charged with providing safety training, establishing specialized safety procedures, and advising the faculty, staff, and administration of the University in matters relating to health, safety, or the environment.

The University is similar to a municipality in that it is subject to a wide range of regulations which include areas such as chemical safety, biological safety, life safety, fire protection safety, radiation safety, environmental compliance and many more. Members of the University are expected to adhere to current policies and procedures as set forth by EHLS and the University as they apply in their daily activities. Therefore, before any alterations or renovations are made to an existing workplace, laboratory, or room, EHLS must be consulted to ensure the safety of the construction activities, as well as the foreseeable safety of the finished project. In addition, any project requiring the use of potentially hazardous equipment, specialized safety controls, or hazardous materials must be reviewed by EHLS prior to initiation.

Employees, faculty and students are expected to be continuously cognizant of the safety needs of themselves and those around them. Members of the university community have a duty to initiate necessary preventive measures to control hazards associated with activities under their direction and are responsible for adherence to applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations. EHLS stands ready to assist you to achieve a University culture in which safety and health are core values.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

The University of Houston is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for eligible students who have temporary or permanent health impairments, learning disabilities, psychological disorders, and/or other disabilities.

Students who have disabilities are encouraged to register with the Justin Dart, Jr. Center for Students with DisABILITIES (CSD) as early as possible in their academic careers. Specific documentation from qualified health care providers is required. Documentation requirements may be obtained through CSD or by visiting their web page at www.uh.edu/csd. A link to the Student Academic Adjustments/Auxiliary Aids Policy is also available through the CSD web page.

Students who have disabilities that may require accommodations, including exam accommodations, interpreters, note-taking assistance, etc., should contact CSD and discuss the process of obtaining such accommodations. Accommodations are recommended on an individual basis through a team approach involving the student, CSD, the Academic Accommodations Evaluation Committee, and instructors or officials.

The University of Houston strives to maintain an accessible campus via ramps, curb cuts, inner-campus accessible parking, Braille signs, TTY’s, etc. Attendant Care Services are available through the Student Health Center at 713-748-8603 for students who have physical disabilities and require this type of assistance. Participating students reside at Cambridge Oaks Apartments.

Students who identify accessibility barriers should contact the Section 504/ADA Coordinator at the Office of Equal Opportunity Services at 713-743-8835 and/or CSD.

Hours of Operation: 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday

All vehicles parked on campus must display a valid UH parking permit issued by Parking & Transportation Services (PTS). This permit allows parking in designated areas as space permits; it does not guarantee a parking space in any particular lot.

Student Permits

Parking permit registration is available on Parking Self- Service through accessuh.uh.edu. Students may choose from garage, student or economy lot permits. During registration a printable temporary permit is provided until the official permit is received by mail. Students should familiarize themselves with the parking regulations by visiting the parking website.

Citations/Appeals

Parking citations double after 21 days, so all students are encouraged to take care of any parking citations in a timely manner. Violations V01 through V05 are discounted if paid within 48 hours of being issued. Parking citations can be paid or appealed online before the 21 day deadline. After 21 days, students forfeit the right to appeal a violation. A complete listing of parking rules and regulations is available on the parking website. To pay or appeal a citation, simply go to accessuh.uh.edu.

Women and Gender Resource Center

Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Women and Gender Resource Center (WGRC) provides a comfortable and friendly place where students, staff, and faculty of all genders can seek information on a variety of topics, obtain confidential referrals to appropriate campus and community resources, and discuss issues of concern. The WGRC presents programming on issues of gender and sexuality within the Center and also does outreach training for a wide range of student organizations and the larger campus community. We sponsor campus-wide events, including Take Back the Night, and The Vagina Monologues. Throughout the year, we collaborate with campus partners on programs highlighting issues such as sexual violence and eating disorders. The WGRC has a small library, DVD collection, two student computers, and a lactation room. Our goals include educating the campus on topics that concern women, with a special focus on violence against women and teaching men how to obtain sexual consent; identifying and researching issues that affect UH women; and serving as a liaison to UH administration, while celebrating the achievements of UH women. The WGRC also provides free resources such as feminine hygiene products, condoms, safer sex supplies, Band-Aids and referrals for business interview suits through Dress for Success Houston. We also are a friendly hangout where we work to build Cougar community and spirit. All are welcome.
