College of Technology Admission Policy

The following are the minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the College of Technology’s graduate programs. Please see the specific department and major for special admission requirements.

Required Items for Admission to Graduate School

  • Submit an online application through the Graduate School.
  • Application Fee: The application fee for all applicants to graduate programs in the College of Technology is $75. International applicants must also pay an additional $75 International Application processing fee for a total of $150.
  • 1 Official Transcript reflecting your Bachelor’s Degree (Must arrive at the Graduate School in a sealed envelope from your college or university.)
  • 1 Official Transcript of any coursework since your Bachelor’s degree (Must arrive at the Graduate School in a sealed envelope from your college or university.)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation.
  • Personal/Goal Statement: A personal/goal statement is a 1-2 page essay describing your current employment and your professional intentions. You may want to identify aspects of your previous experience that indicate promise in your selected goal. You may also wish to discuss special circumstances, unique experiences, etc.
  • Resume (optional)
  • Appropriate Exam Scores - Please submit official exam scores. Please note exams must have been completed within the last 5 years. See the College of Technology Graduate Admissions page for further exam information.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

All graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, must demonstrate proficiency in English to obtain admission to the university. To fulfill this requirement, applicants must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • Baccalaureate degree earned from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or at an institution at which English is the medium of instruction in the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Bahamas, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Jamaica, Liberia, Trinidad, the Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada, Turks and Caicos, and English-speaking Canadian provinces.

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) www.toefl.org

    • The minimum TOEFL score required is 79 for the internet-based test, with a minimum writing score of 20.
    • The minimum TOEFL score for the paper-based exam is 550, with a minimum writing score of 58. TOEFL scores must be received directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS). The University of Houston’s ETS Institutional Code is 6870.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) www.ielts.org

    • The minimum IELTS score required is an overall score of a 6.5, with a minimum writing score of 6.5. The testing agency should mail the official results directly to the University of Houston. That address is as follows:

Admission will depend on grade point average, applicable test scores, and other information. Conditional admission may be granted to students who have a grade point average in the range of 2.75 to 2.99 in their last 60 hours of undergraduate course work. Pre-Graduate Students

Pre-Graduate (Pre-Grad) is a non-degree seeking status allowing students to enroll in up to, but not more than, 12 graduate level credits prior to graduate admission. Students in this non-degree seeking status are not guaranteed admission to the graduate program, nor do they qualify for financial aid or scholarships.

Pre-Grad minimum requirements include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA in the last 60 credit hours of course work. Additional academic background may be required to enroll in some courses. To apply, applicants should submit an application, application fee, official transcripts and letter of intent. Please see a graduate advisor for additional information. 

Pre-Grad students should apply to the graduate program no later than the end of their first term if they wish to become degree seeking. To become degree seeking, all Pre-Grad students must apply to a graduate program and be accepted.

Certificate Students

Certificate students are admitted for the purpose of seeking a certificate, but are not degree seeking. Students in this non-degree seeking status are not guaranteed admission to the graduate program, nor do they qualify for financial aid or scholarships.

Certificate minimum admission requirements include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA in the last 60 credit hours of course work. Additional academic background may be required to enroll in some certificates. To apply, applicants should submit an application, application fee, and official transcripts. Please see a graduate advisor for additional information.

Certificate students wishing to enter the graduate program if they wish to become degree seeking. To become degree seeking, all certificate students must apply to a graduate program and be accepted.

Applicable Course Credit

Any course(s) taken prior to admission to the program, whether on-campus or off-campus, cannot be applied to more than one degree program. For details, consult the Academic Regulations and Degree Requirements section of this catalog.

Only students who have been admitted to a graduate program or Pre-Grad program will be permitted to enroll in graduate courses in the College of Technology. Exceptions require the Dean’s approval.

Accelerated B.S./M.S. Degree Program in Human Resource Development and Global Retailing

The Accelerated B.S./M.S. degree program is open to qualified undergraduate Technology majors in Retailing and Consumer Science and other Human Development and Consumer Science majors wishing to continue their education at the graduate level immediately upon completion of the B.S. degree. Students that are accepted in the accelerated program take up to six graduate credit hours that are applied to both the bachelors’ degree and master’s degree in the Human Development and Consumer Science Department or other Technology majors. Students may pursue either the thesis or non-thesis master’s degree options. The B.S. degree will be conferred upon completion of the undergraduate curriculum requirements with appropriate graduate courses substituted for undergraduate courses. The graduate degree shall be awarded based on existing requirements for the graduate degree in the term the student applies and is admitted to the graduate program. Admission is not guaranteed. Application for the accredited program is recommended for undergraduates during their junior year. Application and completion requirements are available from the Department of Human Development and Consumer Sciences in Room 110 of the Cameron Building or the College of Technology Academic Services Center in Room 108 T.
