Hello everyone,

My name is Cameron Barrett, the Student Government President at the University of Houston. I hope that you all look forward to beginning your journey as Coogs this coming fall. No matter who you are there are a few pieces of advice which can help all students in their journey:

1. Get involved,
2. Ask for help if you need it,
3. Be sure to find time to relax.

Involvement is important. It allows a reprieve from the day-to-day boredom of classes, taking notes, studying, etc., and it provides a great opportunity for character growth in addition to building your resume. I found a wonderful place and opportunity to grow with the Democrats UH club and the Student Government Association. Find your place on campus, and grow within it.

College is difficult, and it comes with a lot of trials and tribulations. You’ll go through many struggles during your time at College, possibly more or less than others. If you’re struggling financially, we have the Urban Experience Program. If you’re struggling with your mental health, we have Counseling and Psychological Services. If you’re struggling with job placement, we have Career Services. There are many services offered at the University of Houston to help you succeed on and off campus, so find them and utilize them when needed.

Finally, College can be very stressful, so try and find time to sit back and relax, whatever that means to you, whether it be sleeping, playing video games, or doing absolutely nothing at all. You can’t be productive 100% of the time, and that’s OK, so accept it, and relax when you can because you will need that time and appreciate that time come finals week.
