Dear Student,
It is with pleasure that I welcome you to the University of Houston for the 2019-2020 academic year. By enrolling in the University, you have become a Houston Cougar for life. It is my hope that you will accept this commitment proudly, become an active member of the UH community, and put forth your best effort to become a highly successful student.
As a member of the University’s dynamic educational community, you have an outstanding opportunity to more fully develop your skills, abilities, and talents through our excellent academic programs, success focused services, and exciting co-curricular activities. Please do not allow this opportunity to pass you by. The more that you become vested in or engaged with the programs and people available to you at UH, the more likely you are to persist from semester to semester, perform better academically, and graduate from the University. In your effort to become engaged, I urge you to be seriously committed to your academic pursuits and enhance the knowledge that you acquire in the classroom by applying it as a member of any of our over 500 registered student organizations, by participating in any of our numerous campus activities, or by helping organize activities for your peers as a student leader.
As you set forth on your path as a Houston Cougar, please know that there are many people at UH who are dedicated to helping you succeed. A good way to find these helpful individuals is through the Dean of Students Student Advocacy and Support Services. If you need additional information or if you are faced with a challenging situation and need assistance, I suggest that you stop by the Dean of Students Office to meet with the Dean on Call. If the Dean cannot answer your question directly, you will be referred to the person, process, or department on campus that has the authority to assist. The resources to address your issue are probably available somewhere in the institution, but you will need to take charge and let us know of your issue. Please don’t hesitate to ask.
