Scholastic Honors

At the end of each semester, the dean’s office publishes a list of those students in each class whose cumulative grade point average and last semester grade point average are each 3.50 or above.

Students who earn a grade point average of between 3.75 and 4.00 for all college work attempted are eligible to graduate summa cum laude. Those who earn a cumulative grade point average between 3.50 and 3.74 are eligible to graduate magna cum laude.

Each year the college awards honors based on excellence in various aspects of academic performance or patient care. Awards currently presented include the following:

The American Optometric Foundation presents the following awards to eligible students:

  • J. Harold Bailey Award - A silver medal is presented to each of two graduating students who have submitted exceptional papers on administrative science. The two recipients are selected on a competitive basis from all optometry colleges.
  • Irvin M. Borish Award - This silver medal is presented to each of two graduating students who have submitted exceptional papers in the field of clinical optometric science. Competition for the award is open to all optometry colleges.
  • Frederick W. Brock Memorial Award - A silver medal is presented to each of two graduating students who have submitted exceptional papers in the field of vision training. This award is open to all optometry colleges.

The local chapter of Beta Sigma Kappa, the national optometric honor society, offers membership to students who maintained a 3.50 grade point average or better during the first year.

Phi Kappa Phi is a national university honor society that offers membership to students meeting its academic and personal standards.
