It’s a Requirement

All bachelor’s degrees from the University of Houston require completion of the core curriculum.

The courses listed here are approved to fulfill basic core requirements for the University of Houston. Students must meet the credit hour requirements for all ten of the categories . Special Topics and Independent Study courses (those courses numbered xx94-xx98) may not be used to meet any Core requirements.

Requirements may change from time to time, so students should stay in regular communication with their advisors.

There may be other requirements

Students should note that many areas of study require specific core course choices, and may also require additional courses which are not listed here. Students should always contact an advisor to confirm or review their specific degree plan requirements.

Why a Core?

The University’s 42-hour core curriculum is informed by a series of basic intellectual competencies - critical thinking skills, communication skills, empirical & quantitative skills, team work, personal responsibility, and social responsibility - that are essential to the learning process in any discipline and includes courses in the disciplinary areas outlined in this site.

Through the Texas Core Curriculum, students will gain a foundation of knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural world, develop principles of personal and social responsibility for living in a diverse world, and advance intellectual and practical skills that are essential for all learning.

Thus the University of Houston continues to maintain, and strives to exceed, the solid standards of higher education shared by institutions across the State of Texas. The University of Houston offers world-class programs to students, faculty, and researchers from local, national, and international arenas.

Our Core - Fall 2014 and forward

Beginning Fall 2014, the core curriculum was redefined by the state of Texas.

Students enrolling at the University of Houston for the first time Fall 2014 and forward will follow the Fall 2014 Core Curriculum requirements.

Any student who first enrolled in an institution of higher education prior to fall 2014 shall, after consultation with an academic advisor, have the choice to:

  • complete the core curriculum requirements in effect in summer 2014; or
  • transition to the current core curriculum requirements, in which case, previously completed core curriculum courses shall be applied to the current core curriculum requirements under the same terms as those that apply to a student who transfers from one institution to another. The student shall then complete the remaining requirements under the current core curriculum.

Students with any questions about what the Core Curriculum requirements are for their specific degree plan, should see an advisor.
