Domestic Applicants

Please note:  Admission to the Hilton College Graduate Program is based on the graduate student candidate’s previous academic records and hospitality-related work experience.

NOTE to FALL 2014 Applicants:  If you are planning on applying for the FALL 2014 TERM, the procedure is all online.  Please click here to visit the web site of the University of Houston Graduate School for detailed information on the new online process.  We highly encourage all Fall 2014 applicants to submit all of their documents electronically:

  • Through myUH, and
  • With electronic delivery of test scores, and
  • Electronically delivered transcripts by academic institutions, if available.
  • Letters of recommendations should be received electronically through the new e-reference process in place.  Applicants need to submit reference information on the online application.


Thank you for your interest in our Graduate Program.  To avoid delays in your application process, we advise you to use this page as your checklist and submit all required documents together in one package to the address listed on this page.  The Graduate Program coordinator will keep in touch with you during the application process.  After receiving a complete application, the review process will take approximately two weeks.

  1. Online Graduate Admission Application - Complete online application and select HRM Graduate.
  2. $50 Application Fee Payable to the University of Houston - This fee will be collected when you submit your application online.  The fee is non-refundable and cannot be waived.  If you choose to delay your application to a later semester, you will have 13 months until you are required to submit a new application and application fee.  NO EXCEPTIONS.
  3. Résumé (submit online) - Must include mailing and e-mail addresses.  More than one year of hospitality-related work experience is preferred.
  4. Personal Statement (submit online) - Concise statement explaining why you wish to pursue your M.S.  Statement should be 250 words and double-spaced.
  5. Two Official College Transcripts from All Institutions Attended - Applicant’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) must be 3.0 out of 4.0 in the last 60 hours of college-level coursework.  Domestic applicants who did not complete their bachelor’s degree in the United States (or other English speaking country) are required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS exam as proof of English proficency.

  6. Official GRE or GMAT Score - GRE or GMAT official score must be sent to the University of Houston - UH’s institution code for the GRE is 6870 and the institution code for the GMAT is XT1-1C-69.  The Hilton College Graduate Program recommends that these exam(s) be successfully completed prior to submission of the graduate admission application.  The admissions committee reviews all three exam sections - quantitative, verbal and analytical writing.
  7. Three Letters of Recommendation (submit online) - Applicants will provide the e-mail address of each recommender while completing online application.  A mix of both employers and professors are preferred.


INTERVIEWS
Interviews are required for Graduate Program applicants who have been selected to continue the admission process.  Interviews are conducted through an online system or in person; a visit to campus is not required.  Not every applicant is invited for an interview.  The interviews are by invitation only.
 

OFFICIAL DECISIONS
The decision for admission is made based on evaluation of all submitted documents.  The official decision will be sent to the applicant’s current listed address.  No decisions will be released by telephone.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Students who attend Hilton College have a number of options for scholarships and financial assistance. Scholarships are available to incoming students each academic year (Fall-Spring). Applications are available each year from November 1 to March 1 for the following academic year. If you wish to be considered for a Hilton College scholarship, you must submit the application by March 1st.

Two Official College Transcripts From All Institutions Attended - Applicant’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) must be 3.0 out of 4.0 in the last 60 hours of college-level coursework.  International applicants for admission to the Hilton College Graduate Program must possess a U.S. bachelor’s degree or the equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree program.  The university does not consider a three-year Bachelor in Hotel Management (BHM) or a diploma program as the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree.  An additional one or two years of postgraduate studies at an accredited institution may be considered for graduate admission with approval from the Dean of the Uh Graduate School.  Applicants presenting a three-year diploma will, if offered admission, be considered as undergraduate students.  Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science program, applicants would then be eligible for admission review for the Hilton College Graduate Program.

    *A complete application includes an evaluation of the applicant’s international credentials by the University of Houston, Office of International Admissions.  This process can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks.
  6. Degree Certificate or Diploma - Needed from all institutions attended if the degree is not shown on official transcript.
  7. Official GRE or GMAT Score - GRE or GMAT official score must be sent to the University of Houston - UH’s institution code for the GRE is 6870 and the institution code for the GMAT is XT1-1C-69.  The Hilton College Graduate Program recommends that these exam(s) be successfully completed prior to submission of the graduate admission application.  The admissions committee reviews all three exam sections - quantitative, verbal and analytical writing.
  8. Official TOEFL or IELTS Score - TOEFL minimum score: 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test) or 100 (Internet-based test).  Must be submitted to the University of Houston by ETS and must reflect institution code 6870.  IELTS minimum score: 7.0 (academic).

    The testing agency should mail the official results to University of Houston, Office of Admissions, Welcome Center, 4400 University Drive, Houston, TX 77204-2023, USA. 
    This test is not required for U.S. citizens or applicants who have graduated from U.S. institutions.  ITOEFL (Institutional TOEFL) is not valid for graduate students.  Refer to the University of Houston’s International Admissions website for further information.
  9. Three Letters of Recommendation (submit online) - Applicants will provide the e-mail address of each recommender while completing online application.  A mix of both employers and professors are preferred.
  10. Statement of Understanding and Letter of Financial Backing Form Supported by a Current Bank (submit online) - Sponsor must submit this letter of financial backing, signing and stating the sponsor’s relationship with the applicant.
  11. Copy of Passport
