University Eye Institute (UEI)

The University Eye Institute (UEI) is located on the main campus of the University of Houston.  The UEI offers services that range from comprehensive vision examinations to the medical and surgical management of eye disorders.  Our nationally-renowned vision professionals use advanced diagnostic instruments in over 80 exam rooms and 30 specialized testing areas, which means that our patients can be assured of the best possible care, utilizing the latest in vision technology.  More than 30,000 patients visit the University Eye Institute each year.

A wide range of eye care is available.  Specialties include the Family Practice Service, Ocular Diagnostic and Medical Eye Service, Cornea and Contact Lens Service, Vision Rehabilitation (Center for Sight Enhancement), Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation, Multiple Sclerosis Eye Care Service, Sports Vision, Color Vision, and Pediatrics.  The Essilor University Optical Service provides professional fittings for prescription eyewear and sunglasses and features an extensive selection of budget frames as well as a large collection of designer frames.

The University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO) is affiliated with four neighborhood healthcare clinics to provide eye and vision care at a reduced cost to thousands within the Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth communities.  Each clinic provides a wide range of services, including comprehensive eye examinations as well as diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.

Mobile Eye Institute (MEI)

The University of Houston Mobile Eye Institute (MEI) is a medical speciality vehicle equipped with the latest in ophthalmic technology and brings comprehensive on-site vision services to patients in need of optometric care.  The MEI assists patients who do not have access to a traditional healthcare system or are unable to travel to the UEI or one of its neighborhood clinics.

Molly and Doug Barnes Vision Institute

The Health and Biomedical Sciences Building is a state-of-the-art facility, which features the Molly and Doug Barnes Vision Institute.  The Institute includes The Doctors of Texas State Optical Alumni Education Center, the UHCO Ambulatory Surgery Center, and the Brien Holden Vision Institute Classrooms and Learning Commons, as well as clinical and patient-based research.  The UHCO is the first optometry school in the nation to offer an on-site ambulatory surgery center, which provides clinical training and research opportunities to enhance academic and clinical education.  With this new facility, students will be involved in the pre- and post-operative management of patients, in collaboration with other health care professionals.

During the student’s fourth year of the professional program, they take part in on-campus patient care, in addition to two semesters (32 weeks) in external health care facilities providing comprehensive eye and vision care.
