Transfer Credit Four C-Rule
Credit Level Changes Grade Point Average

Transfer Credit

  • Course credit already applied to a prior degree may not be transferred or applied toward another degree at any level.  In other words, a course cannot be applied to two different degrees.
  • Credit may be transferred only for advanced or graduate courses completed with grades of A or B.
  • A maximum of six credit hours of transfer credit (with a grade of A or B), upon approval of your departmental Graduate Advisor and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research of the College, can be applied to a Master’s or Ph.D. degree.
  • Transfer credit hours cannot be more than five years old at the time of graduation to satisfy the Master’s degree course requirements.  Exceptions to the five-year limit are rare and require approval through the Dean’s Office to the Provost’s Office.

Credit Level Changes

This includes graduate scholarship or fellowship recipients and TAs and RAs.

  • A graduate student may apply up to six semester credit hours taken as a post baccalaureate (PB) student toward a Master’s degree with departmental and college approval.  No course applied to complete the requirements for a prior degree can be used to satisfy the requirements for a later degree.  A written request to change credit-level must be submitted through the departmental Graduate Advisor to the departmental Graduate Admissions Assistant for approval within one year after receiving notice of acceptance into the graduate program.
  • Courses taken by a PB student who does not qualify for admission to graduate school because of a deficient GPA cannot be transferred to graduate credit after the PB student has been admitted to a graduate program.

Four C-Rule

A graduate student who receives a grade of C+ or lower in 12 semester hours of credit attempted at UH in all courses taken for graduate credit, whether or not in repeated courses, is ineligible for any advanced degree at this institution and will not be permitted to re-enroll for graduate study.

Grade Point Average

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for graduation from the master’s or doctoral programs.  Grades awarded from a completed:
    • Thesis,
    • Dissertation,
    • Project,
    • Telecommunication Internships,
    • Graduate seminar,
    • Undergraduate prerequisites,
    • Course from the College of Technology,
    • Courses not approved by graduate advisor will not be included in the cumulative GPA at the time of graduation, i.e., the 3.0 GPA required for graduation must be earned independently from thesis, dissertation, seminar, or project grades.
  • The cumulative GPA and the Four-C Rule (see previous section) requirements are based upon all of the student’s graduate work taken at the University of Houston, including repeated courses, for which grade point values are assigned.
  • In addition, grades from graduate courses transferred from other universities are not included in the cumulative GPA for graduation.
