Description
Overview of Jewish history from the Hellenistic period through the rise of the rabbis (c. 4th century B.C.E.-4th century C.E.). Topics covered include the Maccabean Revolt and Hasmonean Dynasty, Herodian Dynasty, Dead Sea Scrolls, sectarianism, the rise of Christianity, and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. Throughout the semester, students will sample the Jewish literature produced during this period, including biblical materials, Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, and rabbinic texts.
