Colleges > Cullen College of Engineering > Department of Biomedical Engineering

Introduction

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the following degrees:

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering
  • Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis option) in Biomedical Engineering

The graduate programs are open to all qualified individuals with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Master’s of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Engineering or related field.  Upon completion of this program, students will seek professional positions within the Biomedical Engineering field or continue in academia.

We focus on three specific emerging academic and research fields.  Students will select one track once admitted to the program.

1.  Neural and Rehabilitation Engineering - We focus on neural implants, neurogenesis, neurochips, cognitive engineering, neural signal and image processing and modeling, and brain computer interface from hardware to experimentation.

2.  Biomedical Imaging - We focus on in vivo molecular and cellular imaging research with strong emphasis on the imaging of cancer biomarkers, therapy assessment, and cancer biology models etc.  We also focus on clinical cardiovascular and brain imaging and develop an advanced interdisciplinary research field based on human cardiovascular and brain imaging.

3.  Genomics, Proteomics and Bionano Engineering and Science - We focus on gene regulatory networks, genetics of systems biology, computational biology, and infectious diseases.  We also focus on innovative drug discovery and design, translational research and personalized medicine, as well as the recent advances in bionano science and engineering.

Admissions

Application Procedure

The application process is completed electronically, through the UH School of Graduate Studies. Please refer to their website (http://www.uh.edu/graduate-school/prospective-students/how-to-apply/fall-2015/) for links to the application and to upload all documents.  If you have any questions about this process, required documentation, or problems with the electronic system, please contact Caitlin MacNeil or Dr. Ting Chen in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

NOTE: When preparing your Resume/CV and Personal Statement for submission, please be sure to highlight your past research, current research interests, and UH Biomedical Engineering faculty that you are interested in working with.

Application Submission

The online application, official test scores, and all supporting documents must be received by deadline. This is strongly enforced by the Graduate School.  Documents received after deadline will not be accepted.  Incomplete application files will not receive admission consideration for the semester applied by the student..

If mailing or delivering documents to the Graduate School, please place all contents in one envelope clearly marked with your name and student ID.

Application Status

Upon receipt of all application documents, applicants will receive an e-mail notification indicating that their file is complete and ready for review.  Please do not contact the department about the status of your application after receiving this notice.  You will receive an admission decision notification upon completion of a review by the Admissions Committee and the Associate Dean for Engineering Graduate Studies.
