Biomedical Engineering, Ph.D.

Before starting the program, students need to choose from one of the following three tracks:

  1. Neural, Cognitive, and Rehabilitation Engineering
  2. Biomedical Imaging
  3. Genomics, Proteomics and Bionanoscience and Engineering

Doctor of Philosophy


In addition to continued study of a broad range of engineering fundamentals, candidates for the doctoral degree enjoy intensive exposure to a specific field of engineering research. Individual research is the major focal point for these students, who are expected to expand the frontiers of knowledge in their area of endeavor. Moreover, candidates learn and experience the general philosophy, methods, and concepts of research and scholarly inquiry, so that they may contribute after graduation to substantive issues completely unrelated to their doctoral research. Acceptance into full-time Ph.D. program is generally accompanied by departmental financial support. Ph.D. programs are available in Biomedical EngineeringChemical EngineeringCivil EngineeringElectrical EngineeringEnvironmental EngineeringIndustrial EngineeringMaterials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

A fast-track Ph.D. program, available to undergraduate students upon completion of a bachelor’s degree within that program, is also available in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering (with prior M.S. Degree)


The Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. program (with prior M.S. degree) requires a minimum of 54 credit hours of approved graduate work distributed as follows:

  • One (1) math course (beyond M.S. level) - Total of at least three credit hours
  • Seven (7) courses (all required core and the remaining electives) - Total of at least twenty-one credit hours
  • Thirty (30) credit hours of research and dissertation
  • Seminar attendance (at least one semester per academic year)

 

Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering (directly from Undergraduate)


The Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering program (directly from Undergraduate degree) requires a minimum of 84 credit hours of approved graduate work distributed as follows:

  • Two (2) math courses - Total of at least six credit hours
  • One (1) statistics course  - total of at least three credit hours
  • Nine (9) courses (all required core and the remaining electives) - Total of at least twenty-seven credit hours
  • Forty eight (48) credit hours of research and dissertation
  • Seminar attendance (at least one semester per academic year)
