Master of Science - Thesis Option

General Information

The thesis option (MS) of study (30 credit hours to degree/8 classes + 2 thesis classes) is available only for current petroleum graduate students admitted to the MPE.  The path to the thesis option is as follows:

  • The student must have completed one semester or 6 credit hours toward degree at UH in MPE (not including prerequisites/leveling courses required in the admission letter).
  • They must find a professor with which they share research interest.
  • That professor must agree to mentor them in such research.
  • They must notify the Director of the Program in writing of completion of the previous three bulleted items.
  • They must present a one-page thesis proposal that has been approved by their professor in writing to the Director of the Program and request approval to change to the thesis degree option..
  • Approved thesis requests will be effective in the next semester.
  • To have an official program change in the thesis option, the student will submit a general petition to the academic advisor to change their degree to reflect the thesis option.  (The Director of the Petroleum Engineering Program will have sent the approvals to the academic advisor.)
  • Once approved, a formal contract indicating thesis approval and future requirements will be signed by all parties (Thesis & Dissertation Committee Appointment Form).  These forms are submitted upon completion to the academic advisor.
  • Thesis students will be required to attend the first offered Thesis Workshop for information, planning and requirements of thesis students.
  • The path to thesis is typically a minimum of one year in duration.
