Petroleum Engineering, M.P.E.


Master of Petroleum Engineering - Non-Thesis Option


The MPE degree requires 36 credit hours of approved courses beyond the prerequisite/leveling courses (if required) in Petroleum Engineering.

General Instructions


  • Determine if your application status is Domestic student or International student.  Prospective students are considered domestic if they meet any one of the following criteria:
    1. U.S. citizen,
    2. Permanent U.S. resident
  • Complete the Online Graduate Application (apply online at http://www.uh.edu/graduate-school/prospective-students/how-to-apply/fall-2015/) - the application is available for the fall and spring semesters.
  • Submit three Letters of Recommendation - Include the contact information for your three recommenders into your online application.  Your recommenders will be contacted (via e-mail) after the application has been submitted.  They will be able to electronically attach their recommendation letters directly to your application.
  • Pay the Non-Refundable Application Fee - Please pay with a credit card online at the time of application, through online application web site.
  • Upload the following documents to your myUH account, which is available after application:
    1. Graduate Study Request Form  -upload under “optional-misc items”
    2. Resume
    3. Statement of Purpose (no longer than 1 page)
    4. Copy of Passport/Permanent Resident Card (front & back if permanent resident)
    5. Copy of your test scores (GRE and TOEFL)-upload under “optional-unofficial test scores”
    6. Copy of your official transcript-upload under “optional-unofficial transcript”
  • Request one original Official Transcript from every university/college attended to be sent directly to the address below. Your degree & date of degree completed should appear on the transcript. Have your official transcript sent directly by your institution to the UH Office of Admissions.

*NOTE: If your official transcript is not available in English, please have it translated by the certified educational credentialing service of your choice. (UH does not make recommendations.)  Evaluation of course work is not required, but the original/official transcript from your university must be received as noted above.  This translation document can be scanned and uploaded during the application process in PDF format as a single document.

  • Request Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send Official GRE test score to the main University Admissions office using Institutional Code 6870.
  • Request Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send Official TOEFL test score to the main University Admissions office using Institutional Code 6870.

International students must also submit:

  • English translation of the official transcript(s) certified by the educational credentialing service or if available certified from your university.
  • Upload the following documents to your myUH account:
    1. International Address Form
    2. Financial Backing Form
    3. Proof of Financial Backing - documents (like a bank statement) showing proof of financial ability to afford education in the U.S.
    4. Copy (photocopy/scan) of your passport showing your photograph.

How to submit your materials:

We highly encourage applicants to submit their materials electronically:

  • Through myUH during the application process
  • Electronic ETS delivery of test scores
  • Electronic delivery of transcripts by academic institutions, if available.
  • Letters of recommendations should be received electronically through the new e-reference process in place.

We recommend that applicants submit their materials well before the application deadlines.  The department will review applications at the close of the application deadline (either September 15th for spring admission or April 1st for fall admission).
