Admission Requirements


In addition to meeting the college’s graduate admission requirements , applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Fine Arts program:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with an overall 3.00 (B) average
  • While this undergraduate degree does not have to be in Theatre, the candidate must have garnered knowledge and experience in the history, literature and craft of Theatre to keep up with graduate level work.

Application Procedure

UH’s MFA programs do not require the GRE.

  • For the Acting track:  Candidates are encouraged to audition for the Acting faculty before starting the on-line application process.  Please see the School of Theatre and Dance website for details on auditions. All students on the Acting track start in the Fall Semester.
  • For the Design/Production tracks:  Candidates must provide a portfolio for review by the Design/Production faculty.

When applying for the Design/Production tracks, or after having auditioned for the Acting faculty:

  1. Complete the online graduate application form
  2. Submit the nonrefundable School of Theatre and Dance application fee, paid during application process.

Acting Program - Degree Requirements


Students in the Acting program must complete a minimum of 45 semester hours in graduate courses, including

Students in the Design, Technical Direction or Costume Technology program must complete a minimum of 54 semester hours in graduate courses, including

Course load will be determined based on the student’s track in either acting or design/production, and will be in conjunction with the ensemble they will join.

Candidates on the Acting track start together as an ensemble in the Fall semester, and proceed through designated electives over four consecutive semesters toward graduation.  Acting MFA Students are required to act with a professional theatre company in the summer between their first and second year.

Throughout the program of study, students will be evaluated on a regular basis. A progress review is required during each semester of enrollment in the graduate program.
