The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association (ASHA) accredits the Communication Sciences and Disorders program.

A master’s degree is required for certification by ASHA (www.asha.org) and by the State of Texas (http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/speech/) for professional licensure. The master’s degree and ASHA certification are considered the minimal credentials in the area of Speech-Language Pathology.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements, applicants to the program must have completed required background courses in normal human communication processes at the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate level with a grade point average of at least 3.00 (A=4.00). Less tangible factors also contribute to admission decisions. These may include the potential 1) for communicating effectively and interacting constructively in a clinical and/or supervisory relationship and 2) for contributing to the profession of speech-language pathology.

Before acceptance into any course with practicum activities, all students must pass during the first semester in residence a speech, voice, and language proficiency assessment. Students removed from graduate standing are not eligible to register for practicum courses.
