Mission & Vision Statement:

Consistent with the mission and vision statement of the University of Houston (UH), and the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP), the Master of Athletic Training Program (MATP) will offer a nationally competitive Athletic Training Program that will give students opportunities for learning, inquiry, discovery and personal and professional growth in a real world setting that will prepare students both academically and clinically to enter the workforce as an Athletic Trainer and be successful contributors to the fields of athletic training and sports medicine. 

Master of Athletic Training Program Educational Goals:

The Master of Athletic Training Program will accomplish its mission and vision by having each student demonstrate competency in each of the following areas of study:

  1. Research in Athletic Training
  2. Emergency Management and Prevention of Injury

  3. Strength and Conditioning

  4. Therapeutic Modalities

  5. Administration

  6. Pharmacology

  7. Orthopedic Evaluation

  8. General Medical Conditions

  9. Nutrition

  10. Rehabilitation

  11. Psycho-social Intervention

  12. Clinical Proficiencies

 

Application Information

  • Deadline:
    • The MAT program only begins in summer semesters.

  • Application Requirements:
    1. Completed Online Application.
    2. Completed MAT Program Application (pdf).

    3.  Official GRE scores sent electronically to institution code 6870 - University of Houston, Main Campus

    4. Official transcripts from all prior institutions attended

    5. Current resume 

    6. Statement of professional goals and interests 

    7. Three academic/professional letters of recommendation

    8. 50 hours of observation directly supervised by a certified and licensed Athletic Trainer

    9. Required Prerequisite courses (Minimum grade of ‘C’)

      • Anatomy and Physiology (8 credit hours)

        • UH Course - BIOL 1334/1134 and 1344/1144

      • Biomechanics (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - KIN 3309

      • Exercise Physiology (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - KIN 3306

      • General Psychology (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - PSYC 1300

      • Statistics (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - MATH 2311

    10. Recommended prerequisite courses in addition to requirements (Minimum grade of “C”)

      • Functional Anatomy (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - KIN 3304

      • Motor Learning (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - KIN 4315

      • Nutrition (3 credit hours)

        • UH Course - NUTR 3332

 

 

Post-Acceptance Requirements

Admission into the program is contingent on students completing all post-acceptance requirements.  These requirements include mandatory immunizations, drug screening, background checks, medical insurance, etc.

Complete the Health Screening Form (word doc), this includes

  • A medical history form

  • Physical examination by your physician

  • Proof of immunizations

  • Permission to review health records, etc.

In addition, the applicant will be required to pass a comprehensive background check and a drug screen.  The background check and drug screen information will be provided to the applicant after conditional acceptance into the program.

Admission to the program is not final until all the post-acceptance criteria outlined above are met.

Drug Testing and Criminal Background Check

The Master of Athletic Training Program students will be engaging in clinical rotations working various populations of patients/clients.  Consistent with protocols of healthcare facilities, Master of Athletic Training Program students will undergo both a drug test and a criminal background check administered by CertifiedBackground.com prior to the beginning of clinical rotations.  The cost of both the drug test and criminal background check will be the responsibility of the student.  For more information regarding CertifiedBackground.com, please visit the following link: https://www.certifiedbackground.com/.
