Master of Music - Specialization in Music Education


Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts  > Moores School of Music  > Master of Music Programs  > Specialization in Music Education

Purpose:

To strengthen the pedagogical skills and broaden the musical knowledge of the music teacher.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

In addition or supplementary to the admission requirements stated on the Moores School of Music Master of Music Programs  page, applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in music, or Bachelor’s degree with Texas music teacher’s certification.
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.00 for last 60 semester hours and 3.00 for all music hours.
  3. Submission of Graduate Record Examination General Test scores.
  4. Submission of TOEFL scores (as applicable) that meet University of Houston minimum standards.
  5. Satisfactory results on entrance examinations in music theory and music history. (Unsatisfactory results will require remedial coursework beyond courses required for the degree.)
  6. Applications should include: three letters of recommendation, a current curriculum vitae, copy of a teaching certification or certification plan, statement of purpose, statement of teaching philosophy, and a 20-30 minute video in lieu of a live audition.

Degree Requirements:

  • Final Project Requirement:  Students must submit a final project in music education research through MUED 7399.  Projects generally emerge from coursework and result in either a research paper or pedagogical presentation.  MUED 7399 is repeated until project is completed.
  • Comprehensive Examination Requirement:  Students must pass a comprehensive examination in the last term of study.
