Speech Language Pathology Assistant Certificate

The SLPA Certificate Program prepares students to provide speech and language therapy services under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist in a variety of work settings. Students who complete the SLPA Certificate Program will be eligible to apply for licensure in the State of Texas as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). The program is designed for individuals who have already achieved a bachelor’s degree in another discipline.

SLPA Certificate Program courses provide a basic understanding of speech, language, hearing and swallowing. We strongly recommend that the following background courses be completed prior to entering the SLPA Certificate Program:
Biological Science (e.g., biology, human anatomy); Physical Science (e.g., physics, chemistry); Social Science (e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology); Math (e.g., college-level algebra or higher).
 

Admission to the SLPA Certificate Program

You must be accepted into the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate Program through the University of Houston, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (ComD) in order to enroll in SLPA Certificate Program courses. If you are not accepted into the Department, you will be un-enrolled from ComD courses.

Be sure to provide current contact information on your material and include all previous names.

A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 is required to be considered for admission.

SLPA Certificate Program Curriculum

The SLPA Certificate Program prepares students to provide speech and language therapy services under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist in a variety of work settings. Students who complete the SLPA Certificate Program will be eligible to apply for licensure in the State of Texas as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). The program is designed for individuals who have already achieved a bachelor’s degree in another discipline.

The requirements for completion of the SLPA Certificate Program include 24 credit hours of coursework and 8 credit hours of clinical training for a total of 32 credit hours. Students will acquire a minimum of 25 observation hours and 95 hours of clinical training under the direct, 100% supervision of a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist.
