The Computer Information Systems program provides for the needs of a dynamic and integral part of business and industry–the information systems environment. The Computer Information Systems program consists of 121 hours of undergraduate academic credit. In addition to meeting 42 semester hour university core curriculum requirement, students must meet their major core requirements, CIS Environment, Technology and approved technical electives. Students will obtain a background in business applications, computer concepts, problem-solving, decision making, human relations, evaluation, analysis, and communications. Information systems technologists can be found in a broad spectrum of careers in the private and public sectors including the areas of end-user support, system analysis, telecommunications specialist, applications development, technology project management, database administration, training, and consulting.

Beginning in Spring 2020, students majoring in Computer Information Systems (CIS) within the College of Technology will be required to have a suitable laptop which is in good working order with the latest software and antivirus updates for their entire period of undergraduate study.

Classroom instruction, course assignments and research in and out of class will require the use of a personal computer. Some CIS instructors will also require that students bring their personal laptops to every class or lab. The minimum and recommended specifications for CIS students laptops are defined under “Laptop Recommendations” on the Computer Information Systems website: www.uh.edu/cot/cis.

Students wishing to change their major to Computer Information Systems must have at least an overall 2.75* or higher cumulative grade point average on all attempted courses, including any attempted transfer courses at other institutions. In addition, applicants who have attempted coursework at the University of Houston must have at least a 2.50* or higher cumulative grade point average at the University of Houston starting Spring 2021.

All majors and minors in the Department of Information and Logistics Technology must earn a grade of C or better in all major/minor courses. No grade lower than C will be accepted on any courses applicable to the major transferred to the University of Houston.

Students planning to complete the minor in Business Administration must meet College of Business minor requirements. MANA 3335 , SCM 3301  (requires MATH 1313 ), ACCT 2301  & ACCT 2302  may be applied to the degree and the minor in Business Administration.

  • 2.00 minimum cumulative grade point average in courses attempted at the University of Houston
  • 36 of the credit hours must be advanced (junior or senior level)
  • Final residency - The last 30 hours to be applied toward a bachelor’s degree must be taken in residence at UH
  • 9 advanced credit hours in department of major in residence at UH
  • 120 hours required for this degree
  • Limit 66 credit hours of lower-level (1000 and 2000 level) transfer credit toward an undergraduate degree at the University of Houston
  • Students may use no more than two semester hours in physical education activity courses
  • Students must satisfy TSI to graduate
