Teaching and Learning Major


Students seeking early childhood-6th grade and 4th-8th grade certification must complete the requirements for the Teaching and Learning major. 

This degree requires 120-133 semester hours. Degree outlines are available online at the Teaching and Learning webpage.

The Teaching and Learning major is composed of five components:

  • academic foundations,
  • pre-professional development courses,
  • specific B.S. Coordinating Board requirements for mathematics and science, and
  • the Student Teaching Sequence.

Students with a 2.5 cumulative UH GPA may declare a major in Teaching and Learning.

Students being re-admitted to the Teaching and Learning major must:

  1. be placed on a contract in which they are required to obtain the cumulative GPA required for admission to the major (2.5) within 2 long terms of entry into the College, and
  2. complete at least two courses in major each of these first two semesters and have their course enrollments approved by academic advisors.

Certificates Available Through Teaching and Learning:

  • Early Childhood - 6th grade generalist teacher certification
  • Early Childhood - 6th grade bilingual teacher certification
  • Early Childhood - 6th grade/Special Education supplemental/ESL supplemental
  • 4th - 8th grade English Language Arts teacher certification
  • 4th - 8th grade Science teacher certification
  • 4th - 8th grade Mathematics teacher certification
  • 4th - 8th grade Social Studies teacher certification
