Applied Economics, M.A.

The department offers a program of study leading to the Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics. The Master of Arts in Applied Economics degree is offered under two 30-hour plans; a thesis option and a non-thesis option with internship.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements , applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Arts in Applied Economics program.

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, at least a 3.00 grade point average (A=4.00) in the most recent 60 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate courses. Applicants must present Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores and must submit three letters of recommendation. (Verbal, quanititative, and analytical writing GRE scores are examined separately and evaluated as one information source in the total application.) Prerequisite coursework includes: ECON 3332, ECON 3334, ECON 4365 and MATH 1431 or MATH 1314 (found in undergraduate catalog).

The M.A. in Applied Economics is designed to be completed within one calendar year. The program begins in the fall semester. Coursework continues through the subsequent spring semester and is completed with thesis or internship hours in the following summer. Applied Economics students are generally admitted only in the fall semester.

Program Requirements


There are 2 plans under which graduate students can earn a Master of Arts in Applied Economics: M.A. Plan I: 24 hours of coursework and 6 hours of Master’s thesis hours; M.A. Plan II: 24 hours of coursework and 6 hours of approved internship.

Statistical Techniques (7 semester hours)


Applied Economics (9 semester hours)


Internship or Thesis (6 semester hours)


Total 30


Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above and satisfactorily complete a comprehensive examination.
