Global Engagement and Research Minor


The Honors College  > Global Engagement and Research Minor

The interdisciplinary Minor in Global Engagement and Research is open to baccalaureate students in all majors and degree programs. The minor is based on the idea that in an increasingly globalized environment, success requires the ability to navigate a dynamic multicultural terrain, whether in Houston, across the nation, or internationally, and that in developing that global awareness and perspective, students should build upon what they learn in the classroom through meaningful engagement with the communities they are studying and seek to understand.

Two aspects of the minor will make it distinct: global is not defined as international, but more broadly, as including Houston and its region, the nation, and the world. This global focus will be designed for the student to explore questions about how a specific place and its physical, political, economic, social, historical, and cultural topography make a difference relative to other locales. 

Said another way, the minor addresses the question, “what difference does ‘here’ make?”  In addition, each elective course approved for the minor will include a significant experiential learning component; this engagement, ranging from Learning Abroad/Learning Away experiences to service learning or community research components, will differentiate the minor from a traditional, classroom-restricted approach to global and international studies.

Approved Courses (9 hours):


Courses listed below, when they include experiential learning components, are an initial list of approved courses for the Global Engagement and Research Minor. Academic petitions for approval of coursework that can be applied to the Minor, not listed below, will be made to the director of the Global Engagement and Research Minor and the dean of the Honors College. Students must earn a 3.0 average GPA or higher in all coursework counted toward the minor.

Additional Program Requirements:


In addition, students must complete at least 12 hours in residence, 9 hours of which must be at the advanced level. A maximum of 6 hours of approved transfer credits may be accepted toward the minor upon the approval of the program director. No more than 6 hours of a student’s major may be applied towards the minor.

Co-Curricular Requirements:


Students will complete three documented and approved experiential learning excursions, from at least two of the following categories, with one of the excursions lasting at least 10 days, or (by petition) involving a commensurate level of intensity over a shorter duration.

  • Local - Texas
  • National - outside Texas, but in the United States and its territories
  • International - outside the United States

Approval Process:


The Office of Global Engagement and Special Programs (OGESP) maintains a list of approved excursions at http:uh.edu/honors/students/current-students/global-engagement/. Faculty or students may submit additional experiential learning excursions for either prior or retroactive approval. Once an excursion has been approved and added to the list, any documented participant may count it toward the minor.

Approval Criteria:


To be approved, excursions must have a global (defined as focusing on how a specific place and its physical, political, economic, social, historical, and cultural topography make a difference relative to other locales) orientation and offer opportunity for meaningful community engagement, research, and/or reflection. In addition, OGESP considers the following as positive criteria when evaluating excursions: faculty leadership of the trip, integration into a for-credit course, duration and intensity of the experiential learning component, inclusion of reflective practice and other high-impact practices.

Documentation Process:


For each of the three experiential learning excursions to be applied of the minor, students must submit documentation in one of the following forms: of a first-person written reflection assignment previously submitted for course credit, a faculty affidavit attesting successful participation and completion of the excursion, or other documentation.
