Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL), Certificate

The Department of English offers a 15-hour course track that will give undergraduate students a certificate showing their completion of a Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL). Open to English majors and students in other departments.

Certificate Requirements


Credit hours required for this certificate: 15.0

This 5-course (15 credit hour) certificate offers a variety of professionalization experiences within the following general areas:

  • Culture and Society
  • Language Teaching Methodology/L2 Assessment
  • Second Language Acquisition
  • Structures of English
  • Supervised Language Teaching Practicum; or Additional Approved Course

Additional Information


The administration of the Certificate will be overseen by a Director of TEAL. This Director will be either the Director of the LCC or a tenured professor in English. The Director will review course offerings; monitor student performance; propose courses to be offered in a given semester; periodically review and revise the course inventory for the Certificate; certify that students have met the Certificate requirements; and award Certificates to those students who have completed all requirements. The practicum will be overseen by a Practicum Coordinator who would be responsible for reviewing all proposed practicums and ensuring that they meet the course requirements. Any practicum offered will need the written approval of the Practicum Coordinator. As part of the practicum, there would be a Site Supervisor who will ensure that the student fulfilled the practical component of the practicum. The Site Coordinator will submit a written evaluation of the student’s performance, and this evaluation would be factored into the student’s final grade. The Practicum Coordinator will approve all Site Supervisors for the practicums.
