Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements , applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Ph.D. in Economics program:

Requirements include outstanding performance in courses taken for the Master of Arts degree and a grade of superior on the Master of Arts comprehensive examination in macro and microeconomic theory.

Degree Requirements

  1. All requirements listed for the Master of Arts degree in economics at the university, or their equivalents, that have not already been completed
  2. Course work for a second specialty in a field approved by the graduate program director (six hours in addition to the master’s requirements)
  3. ECON 8361  and ECON 8362 
  4. Graduate economics electives: 12 hours in addition to the master’s requirement. (Can include up to six hours of reading courses.)
  5. Successful completion of a comprehensive examination in the specialty field, the form of the examination to be determined by the graduate faculty in economics
  6. ECON 8399 :ECON 8699 :ECON 8999 
  7. A cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above

Special Academic Regulations

Doctor of Philosophy students are advanced to candidacy upon the successful completion of the comprehensive examination in the specialty field. Students will work with a dissertation advisory committee and a major supervising professor appointed by the graduate program director in consultation with the student and the faculty. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded when students have successfully defended the dissertation before the graduate faculty of the department.
