Master of Engineering
The Master of Engineering degree is offered in the fields of Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering. Also available in Industrial Engineering is a Master of Engineering degree with a concentration on Engineering Management
General Prerequisites
Graduate students seeking the Master of Engineering degree must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in Engineering or a related discipline.
General Requirements
Each student must complete between 30 and 36 semester hours of academic work, which may or may not include a design project, depending on departmental requirements. Approximately one-third of the program will be in engineering design, one-third in advanced technical courses, and one-third at the option of the major department.
In general, no 3000-level courses are applicable to a graduate degree program. The use of junior-level engineering courses by engineering students should be for leveling courses only. Any use of junior-level courses for graduate credit must be approved in advance by petition.
All course work taken to satisfy the Master’s degree requirements must be approved in advance by the departmental or program graduate advisor. The student is expected to be familiar with the various requirements of his or her particular department or program.
Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering
Specific Requirements for M.I.E.
- 33 semester hours of graduate courses are required for the MIE degree.
- These requisite degree program hours are in addition to any leveling courses.
- Students whose primary language is not English may be required to complete compulsory English communications course (INDE 6359 ). Engineering communication course is not required for the international students who score 50 percentile or higher on the verbal section of the GRE exam.
- All MIE students must take INDE 6111 (graduate seminar course) at least once during their studies.
Students are required to take six core courses based on the following options:

- INDE 6372 (Advanced Linear Optimization)
- INDE 7397 (Probability and Statistics). A new course course number (INDE 6333) will be assigned to this course beginning in Fall 2014.
- INDE 6370 (Digital Simulation)
- Students are required to take three of the following six core courses:
No more than 6 semester hours of course work applied to this degree may be taken outside the IE Department. However, prior approval by the IE Graduate Program Director is required.
