Hospitality Management, Joint M.S/B.S.


Program Description

The Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston offers the joint (or accelerated) B.S. and M.S. in Hospitality Management program.  Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management who wish to continue on to a Master of Science in Hospitality Management can complete their Master’s in one additional year.  This program is designed to attract high quality students to both undergraduate and graduate programs.  This proposal provides several values.  First, for students’ perspectives, it provides a clear venue to pursue academic goals in the accelerated path.  Second, for the college’s perspective, the proposed program serves as an effective recruiting tool to attract high caliber students from prospective and existing undergraduate students to the graduate program. 

The proposed program will be academically rigorous, rare in the marketplace and efficient with respect to time to completion in five years.

The colleges envision the joint (or accelerated) program operating as follows:

Application Process

Applicants apply to and gain admission to this joint program during their Senior year or after completing the B.S. degree.  Admission to the M.S. program will be conditional on successful completion of B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management, on maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, and on meeting all requirements in the following bulleted item.

  • Applicants shall take GRE or GMAT (institution code for GRE is 6870 and GMAT is XT1-1C-69) - The admission committee reviews the quantitative, verbal, and analytical writing sections.
  • Online Graduate Admission Application - Complete at http://www.applytexas.org and select HRM Graduate.
  • $50 Application Fee for Domestic Applicants
  • $125 Application Fee for International Applicants
  • Complete Resume (submit online) - More than one year of hospitality related work experience preferred for admission.
  • Personal Statement (submit online) - Concise description of why you wish to pursue your M.S. in Hospitality Management.  Approximately 250 words, double spaced.
  • Two Official College Transcripts (from all institutions attended)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (submit online)

Interviews

Interviews are required for Graduate Program applicants who have been selected to continue the admission process.  They are conducted through an online system; a visit to campus is not required.  Not every applicant is invited for an interview.  The interviews are by invitation only.

Additional Information For International Applicants

Course Replacement/Acceptance

Admitted students (conditionally or unconditionally admitted students) will be accomplished by satisfying 12 credit hours of Master’s level courses in the Senior year of their Bachelor’s program.  These 12 credit hours will be applied towards both students’ Bachelor’s and Master’s program.  After completing their B.S. in HRM and being accepted into the M.S. program, an additional 24 Master’s level credit hours will complete their M.S. in Hospitality Management.
