The Bachelor of Arts degree in Art will benefit students wishing to pursue a program that places great emphasis on the liberal arts, but with a strong concentration in the field of art. In addition to the college requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, a minimum of 51 semester hours in Art is required. Students who are interested in careers in teaching Art from Early Childhood through 12th Grade and wish to work toward eventual teaching certification, may benefit from incorporating the Minor in Education in fulfillment of the BA degree requirements. Students interested in the Minor in Education should contact the College of Education about the minor requirements and application process, and they should also seek advising in the School of Art about content courses that support this goal.

University of Houston - Core Requirements (42 hours)


College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Requirements* (15 hours)


1. Two courses: 2000 level or above in Foreign Language 6 hours
2 Three courses: College courses outside of the major requirements, core, and language requirements 9 hours
3. Completion of one of the following requirements:
  • Approved minor
  • Second major
  • Second bachelor’s degree
  • Senior honors thesis

Art History: Four courses (12 Hours)


(ARTH 1300  may not be applied towards the major.)

Fundamentals: Five 1000 level studio courses (15 hours)


Related Arts: Eight studio courses (24 hours)


  • Seven courses must be 3000 or 4000 level
  • No more than three 3000/4000-level courses in any one studio discipline

Studio Disciplines: Drawing, Ceramics, Graphic Design, New Media, Painting, Photography/Digital Media, Printmaking and Sculpture

Total 120 hours
