College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences > Department of Political Science > Applied Politics Minor
The Applied Minor aims to help students integrate a practical, applied politics, experience into a coherent course of classroom study. In this minor, experiential learning is viewed as a complement to, and enrichment of, students’ academic learning. Conversely, the classroom courses provide tools and contextual background which enable students to get the most out of their experiential learning, and to excel in political internship settings. This minor offers a solid foundation for students wishing to explore graduate and career work in government service, campaign management, public opinion polling, diplomacy and international development.
The Minor in Applied Politics is available to all UH students; academic advising is offered by undergraduate advisory staff members in the Political Science Department. The Minor is directed by Dr. Lydia Tiede (PGH 414).
Students taking the Minor in Applied Politics course must take courses that fall under the following three designations:
- Context
- Applied Tools
- Experiential
Students must choose between “U.S. & Local Context Courses” and “International and Comparative Context Courses”. A maximum of 6 semester hours of completed minor coursework may be counted towards a student’s major.
The Minor in Applied Politics requires a minimum of 18 semester hours; a minimum of 12 hours must be at the 3000 level or above. At least 12 of the 18 hours must be in residence. Of the 12 hours in residence, a minimum of 9 hours must be at the 3000 or above. A minimum 2.5 grade point average is required for all courses attempted in the minor.
