The online MA in US Hispanic Studies, in conjunction with the existing Graduate Certificate in Spanish as a Heritage Language, also offered by the Department of Hispanic Studies, is aimed at accomplishing the following:

  1. preparing a corps of well-trained teachers of Spanish and Hispanic culture for heritage language learners;
  2. attracting Spanish teachers at schools and community colleges (where the majority of Hispanic students study) to begin their graduate education and even continue beyond the certificate and MA to a PhD;
  3. strategically enabling other institutions that do not have the advanced programmatic and personnel resources of the University of Houston to further the graduate education of their students receiving BA degrees and teachers in their surrounding communities; and
  4. to allow professionals from diverse fields (e.g., medical, business, the arts) to acquire the necessary tools to successfully work with the Hispanic community in the United States and in global environments.

The online MA in US Hispanic Studies will prepare students in:

  1. the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language;
  2. linguistic, cultural, literary, historical, sociopolitical, and artistic components of the U.S. Hispanic community; and
