About the Certificate

The Oil & Gas Certificate (O&G) delivers the tools and cross-functional expertise to prepare students for positions in the Oil & Gas industry. A three-course certificate in the area of Oil & Gas/Energy accounting was developed through a joint effort with various upstream, midstream, and Oil & Gas/Energy companies, along with CPA firms and other affected stakeholders in 2009. The C. T. Bauer College of Business is one of the few schools that offer courses in Oil & Gas Accounting. Students who have obtained this certificate are known to be widely recruited by Houston Oil & Gas/Energy companies and large CPA firms.

Networking opportunities

Throughout the fall semester, representatives from accounting and industry firms host a one credit hour colloquium course. The colloquium is intended to help students learn about the companies, network with the representatives, and learn what it means to be an accountant in the Oil & Gas/Energy industries. Many of these companies offer internships designed to prepare students for a career in Oil & Gas/Energy accounting and provide them with invaluable exposure to practical experiences in the accounting profession.

To earn the O&G Certificate, a student must:
  • Complete (3) three required courses with a 3.0 cumulative GPA for the courses. Courses cannot be substituted for the required list.
  • Complete (1) one colloquium listed specifically for the certificate with a letter grade of “S” (satisfactory).
  • Earn a minimum 2.5 cumulative and accounting major GPA.
