The minor in Criminology, Law, and Deviance provides students with a sociological perspective on criminal, delinquent, and deviant behaviors; aggression and violence; forms of punishment; systems of social control; workings of the criminal legal system, and victimization. This minor is designed for students who wish to gain an in-depth understanding of the types, origins, causes, and explanations for the relevant issues, their impact on society and individuals, as well as solutions to these problems.

The Criminology, Law, and Deviance minor requires 18 credit hours.

Required

SOC 3313 - Criminology Credit Hours: 3

Five additional advanced (i.e., 3000/4000 level) SOC courses (15 credit hours)

At least 12 of those hours must come from the following list:

SOC 3311 - Sociology of Law Credit Hours: 3
SOC 3312 - Sociology of Deviance Credit Hours: 3
SOC 3314 - Juvenille Delinquency Credit Hours: 3
SOC 3335 - Sociology of Punishment Credit Hours: 3.0
SOC 3336 - Aggression and Violence in Society Credit Hours: 3.0
SOC 3337 - Women and Crime Credit Hours: 3.0
SOC 3338 - Punishment in the U.S. Credit Hours: 3.0
SOC 3382 - Sociology of Drug Use & Recove Credit Hours: 3
• Nine of the required 18 credit hours must be taken in residence at the University of Houston.

• A minimum of 2.0 GPA is also required for the minor.

• The proposed minor program must be approved by the undergraduate advisor in Sociology.
