Curriculum and Instruction, MEd - Specialization in Reading and Language Arts Education


Students pursuing the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Reading and Language Arts Education can choose among two emphasis areas:

  1. Literacy Education with Dyslexia Instruction - This emphasis area is a 30-hour degree program offered online and is designed to provide students with a research-based understanding of the academic concepts that align with literacy and dyslexia program objectives.
  2. Literacy Leadership with Principal Certification - This emphasis area is a 33-hour degree program offered in a hybrid format for Texas residents only and is designed to provide aspiring literacy leaders with a research-based understanding of the academic concepts that align with literacy and leadership program objectives.

Students who choose the specialization in Reading and Language Arts Education are typically PK-12 grade educators who are teachers, educational advocates, campus administrators, and other educators working in a variety of professional settings that include consultants and program designers.

Graduates from this program typically remain in the educational arena as teachers, campus administrators, policy advocates, consultants, state agency officers, and other educational systems that connect to educational systems.

Admissions Requirements


The following are applicant requirements to be considered for admission into the M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction with a specialization in Reading and Language Arts Education:  ApplyWeb application, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a statement of interest, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be considered for unconditional acceptance for graduate study. Additionally, all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, must demonstrate proficiency in English to obtain admission to the UH Graduate School.

NOTE: Currently, GRE test scores are not required.

Degree Requirements


Students use MyAdvisor to reflect benchmark requirements for degree completion; a degree plan requires approval by a faculty advisor, the program coordinator, the department chair, and the Dean prior to completing 18 semester hours of credit.

In addition to the coursework listed below, all students in the CUIN Master of Education program must satisfactorily complete a Capstone project during their final term of course work. The Capstone Project requires candidates to identify a problem-of-practice related to a literacy need for a group of students who can range from kindergarten to twelfth grade.  In consultation with a faculty advisor, each M.Ed. candidate will design, develop, and describe the proposed problem-of-practice research area and intervention.

The following courses are required for each emphasis within the Reading and Language Education specialization areas.
