Welcome

The Masters of Education in Counseling program is designed for potential students seeking a career in clinical mental health. This program is designed to prepare students for Texas licensure as an LPC. Graduates of our program can work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, mental health agencies, private practice, and more. Prospective students do not need a specific undergraduate degree or prerequisites. Prospective students are clear this is a counselling program and not a psychology program. Visiting American Counseling Association, Texas Counseling Association and Licensed Professional Counselors of Texas can give more details on the profession.

What should I expect?

We are a 60 credit hour program (20 classes) to be completed in three years. We only accept candidates in the fall term. Our curriculum consists of three Field experience courses, one practicum course and two internship experiences. As candidates move through the program, faculty will offer consistent skill development feedback, clinical practice and professional development opportunities.

What will I learn?

  • Counseling theories, skills, and techniques for diverse populations with various counseling issues or needs
  • Understanding and awareness of the role and influence of the counselor in providing services to diverse cultural, ethnic, religious, gendered and social populations
  • Knowledge of legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities related to the practice of professional or school counseling
  • Application of relevant empirical research to broaden knowledge of delivery and counseling services
  • Understanding and knowledge of effective and appropriate assessment and evaluation of clients or students in placements and delivery of intervention

Admission Requirements


Potential students do not have a specific background, our counseling students have a variety of undergraduate degrees and background experiences. We accept students into our program from a variety of disciplines and no specific courses are required for program admission. Admissions requires: letter of interest (why counseling?), 3 recommendations, 3.0 GPA (last 60 hrs).

The College of Education takes into consideration a number of criteria when determining admission, including prior college or university performance, letters of recommendation, standardized test scores and statement of intent. 

An applicant is responsible for ensuring that all required materials for the evaluation of admissions are received by the College before the program’s deadline. If the application is not complete by the program’s deadline, it will not be evaluated for admissions. Degree Requirements


In addition to the required coursework listed below, the MEd in Counseling program requires a final comprehensive exam. The CPCE Comps Exam is administered during the last year of the program.
