Chemical Engineering, M.S.Ch.E.

The major focus of this program is advanced chemical engineering fundamentals.  Recipients of the Master of Science (M.S.) degree are broadly qualified for employment in industry or possible continued studies towards a Doctor of Philosophy degree.  Students with a B.S. in Chemical engineering typically complete all requirements in 12 to 18 months.  Further important information on requirements and procedure for applying are available at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering admission website:

Master of Science - Course Work Only

This (course-based) M.S. degree is obtained solely through satisfactory performance in course work.  This program is intended for students with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or related field.  The program is for full time or part time students.  Many part time students work in the local industry.  Thirty semester hours of graduate coursework are required to obtain a M.S. degree, consisting of the four required core courses plus six elective courses.  No financial assistance is provided for M.S. students.  Course listings and other information on the department can be found at http://www.chee.uh.edu.

Master of Science - Thesis Option

(Special Admit Process, only for students admitted to the MS Course work program after the first semester at UH)

Admission to the M.S. Thesis option program is only applicable after admission to the M.S. Coursework program and then only after satisfactory performance in the first semester of course works.  Admission is very limited and requires a faculty member to agree to Chair a M.S. thesis.  Be advised, the number of M.S. thesis projects is very limited.  Also, financial aid is generally not offered to M.S. thesis students.

M.S. thesis students are required to complete 18 semester hours of coursework for completion of the M.S. degree, 12 of which are the four required core courses indicated on the website (http://www.chee.uh.edu).  If permitted to conduct a M.S. thesis, the research and thesis will provide an additional 12 credit hours to obtain the total of 30 hours.  The thesis must be presented and satisfactorily defended in a public oral examination.
