42 Credit Hours To Complete


This program prepares competent counselors to work in schools or similar agencies, addressing the developmental needs of all students.  The certified school counselor has a broad knowledge base, applies the knowledge base to promote the educational, personal, social, and career development of the learner, participates in the development, monitoring, and evaluation of a developmental school guidance and counseling program  promoting learners’ knowledge, skills, motivation, and personal growth, promoting academic success for all learners by acknowledging, respecting, and responding to diversity while building on similarities that bond all people (Title 19, TAC §239.15).  

The certified school counselor, an advocate for all students and the school, demonstrates effective professional and interpersonal communication skills and continues professional development, demonstrating a commitment to learn, to improve the profession, and to model professional ethics and personal integrity (Title 19, TAC §239.15)

Criteria include forty-two (42) graduate credit hours, a college certification plan, state minimum requirements (Title 19, TAC §239.5) and state requirements for issuance of certification (Title 19, TAC §239.20).  A Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Counseling in the Department of Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences is required for certification.  For more information, consult the Department of Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences, 491 Farish Hall, (713) 743-9830.
