• With the permission of the Director of the Undergraduate Program (DUS), students may substitute the requirement of the 3-hour capstone course by completing a faculty-directed internship or by completing a 6000-level graduate seminar. Any graduate level hybrid course (4XXX/6XXX) can only be used to fulfill this requirement if 6000-level seminar is a research seminar.
• With the permission of the Director of the Undergraduate Program (DUS), students may also fulfill the requirement of a capstone course by writing a Senior Honors Thesis which requires to take two courses (six credit hours). Bachelor of Arts in History with Professional Studies Concentration

For history majors planning careers in energy/environment; law and public policy; public history; or science, medicine, and technology, the department offers a Professional Studies concentration, consisting of 9 hours. The 9 hours fit within the history major requirements and do not add additional hours. Students who are interested in pursuing a Professional Studies concentration must decleare their intent with the Undergraduate Advisor.

Energy/Environment Track:

• Students participating in this track can either take a History capstone course relating to the track or undertake an internship, independent research project, or senior thesis on energy/environment. Students doing an internship or research project must register for this course under the supervision of a designated History faculty member or the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).
• Two additional 3000 or 4000 level courses relating to energy/environment are required. See list below for recommended courses. 3000 or 4000 level Special Problems courses can count towards a concentration if relevant, but permission from the DUS is required.
• Relevant graduate courses could count for the second or third courses in the track, but instructor and DUS permission is required.
• All written work for the track must be included in an e-portfolio that follows the style and content guidelines of professional track portfolios and is submitted to the DUS by the designated deadline.

Law and Public Policy Track:

• Students pursuing the Law and Public Policy track should take the legal capstone course HIST 4355 - Topics in the History of Law and Society . If not offered during the degree time, students can undertake an internship, independent research project, or senior thesis in the area of law or policy. Students doing an internship or research project must register for this course under the supervision of a designated History faculty member or the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
• Two additional 3000 or 4000 level courses relating to law or policy history are required. See list below for recommended courses. Students will be expected to provide evidence that their written work in these courses had a legal or public policy angle.
• Relevant graduate courses could count for the second or third courses in the track, but instructor and DUS permission is required.
• All written work for the track must be included in an e-portfolio that follows the style and content guidelines of professional track portfolios and is submitted to the DUS by the designated deadline.

Public History Track:

• Students pursuing the Public History track must take HIST 3315 .
• Two additional 3000 or 4000 level courses relating to public history are required. See list below for recommended courses. 3000 or 4000 level Special Problems courses can count towards a concentration if relevant. Ideally, students pursuing the Public History track will also take a capstone that is designated as Public History in focus.
• Relevant graduate courses could count for the second or third courses in the track, but instructor and DUS permission is required.
• All written work for the track must be included in an e-portfolio that follows the style and content guidelines of professional track portfolios and is submitted to the Director of Undergraduate Studies by the designated deadline.

Science, Medicine, and Technology Track:

• Students participating in this track can either take a History capstone course related to the track or undertake an internship, independent research project, or senior thesis on science, medicine, or technology history. Students doing an internship or research project must register for this course under the supervision of a designated History faculty member or the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
• Two additional 3000 or 4000 level courses relating to science, medicine, and technology are required. See list below for recommended courses. 3000 or 4000 level Special Problems courses can count towards a concentration if relevant.
• Relevant graduate courses could count for the second or third courses in the track, but instructor and DUS permission is required.

Other Requirements

Students majoring in History must also meet:

• The University of Houston’s core curriculum requirements.
• The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
• Students must complete at least 12 of the advanced hours in History in residence.
• Students must earn at least a 2.0-grade point average on all work attempted in History at the University of Houston.
